Thomas Kohl - MAELSTROM

March 20th - May 3rd 2014

Thomas Kohl (*1960) is one of the most renowned landscape painters. More correctly a painter, then for Thomas Kohl it’s not about landscapes, not about landscape images as such; but more as painting as a possibility of an acquisition of the world, about the obligatory approach of painting to the entity of nature. The painting process demands Thomas Kohl’s full presence: for one it is a balancing act in the observation of the existing and the developing. Another central artistic aspect of the painting process is the art historical reflection. The consciousness of already painted imagery always plays a primary role. Thomas Kohl sounds the possibilities of this medium’s suggestive image force in the direct dispute with the tradition of landscape painting.

Thomas Kohl already assessed this question since his studies at the Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie, where he first studied with the sculptors Tony Cragg and Günter Uecker between 1981 – 1989 and then with Gerhard Richter.

For the beholder, elemental reality experiences are superimposed with the conditioned vision of our conception of landscape and form. They offer an infinite possibility of observation and keep not only for the experienced glance a light, clear picture language and recognition.

Thomas Kohl’s works are found in countless institutional and private collections.
