Raimund Girke

10th of September - 15th of November 2014

„Painting is not here to register emotional states or experiences:”

From the end of the fifties, Raimund Girke developed an independant, formal reduced painting as a refusal to the Informel movement, which, similarly to the artists of the ZERO group (Mack, Piene, Uecker), sets structure in lieu of expression.

Girke avowed himself not only technically but also strictly to the classical panel painting. White as a colour dominated up to his last paintings, in his late works in a
distinct contrast between light and dark. Girke understood white as a colour analogue to Goethe´s colour theory. For him the colour white stands for silence, asceticism, spontaneity and controll. His works are an invitation for contemplation, an offer to the diversity of our perception possibilities.

Wir are showing selected canvas and paper works from the substantial Œvre of this groundbreaking and unique painter of our time in close cooperation with Madeleine Girke, the daughter and custodian of Raimund Girkes Estate.
